Why tulsi leaves should be swallowed and not chewed?

One reason is that Tulsi leaves contain a high amount of mercury and iron, which are released on chewing them. These minerals are known to damage your teeth and cause discoloration. Moreover, Tulsi leaves are also slightly acidic in nature and since the environment in our mouth is alkaline, it may cause the tooth enamel to wear away if consumed regularly in very large quantities. Therefore, most people recommend that raw Tulsi leaves should be gulped down with a glass of water instead of being chewed, perhaps as a preventive measure.

A great way to consume Tulsi is to prepare a tea. It is known to boost your immunity and fight germs and can heal many skin disorders like acne. It is also believed to control your blood sugar levels. For a cup of herbal and caffeine-free tea, boil ¼ cup of Tulsi leaves with water. After the first boil, bring down the heat to low and let it brew for about 10 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of lime juice and strain. Sip gently. more

Good and useful information more
Tulsa leaves are to be gulped with water as earlier charna-amrit was offered to devotee in temple early morning. more
Does Mr. Brij Gupta have any solid research on which his observation is based? If this were true, we would not be adding the leaves to 'naivedia' offered to deities. I am not a blind believer on everything ancient, but our ancestors had empirical knowledge of nature. Of course everything should be consumed in moderation. And how do those toxic elements disappear after boiling? more
Can Gud or Jaggery, be used along with Tulsi leaves instead of Honey, as Honey is not used by some people for spiritual , religious reasons.? suggestion Also how about adding Arjun Chhal Powder to it. more
adding honey to boiling hot water will turn the honey toxic, hence honey should be added only after the tea has become luke warm. more
I did read about it some where also that honey should not be added to water at high temperature, but did not find any scientific explanation for the same. Can you please let me know the details if you have come across? more
