Waste Recycling - Issues and Root Causes

We have successfully created toilets in rural Manjakkudi for more than 2000kids in a school where the waste is recycled into compost manure for the garden..all eco friendly.

Swatch Bharat should be every one of us responsibility to make it successful. It has to be movement by all citizen and not only blaming the system.

If people make it busyness to collect and recycle waste in city and rural area,they earn good profits and provide area clean, hygenic and pleasant looking. In Europe even agri. fields are so clean good looking that my heart was filled with joy.

Waste recycling is the best option to Swachhbharat mission. Awareness shall be built right from the individual level ie from individual person , to family, to society , to city and to state level. Peoples shall be trained /educated to recycle or segregate and use the materials at the source only instead of collecting and dumping at large level. Eg person should be made aware that newspaper are recyclable and can not thrown in dustbin ,but can be collected at house and given to local Bhangarwala/traders, you will get handsome money out of that and that will go to recycling . likewise many other items like glass bottles, plastics, iron etc so segregation done at root level and not reach to dumping ground as waste. Like wise biodegradable materials like kitchen waste , vegetables, etc are also useful if it is processed. eg like biogas plant can be set up among the society of 100 people, plant require very less investment ,but output is Methane gas that can be used for cooking purpose. and liquid waste has got fertilizer value , can be used for plantation in garden. We are doing research to develop small scale biogas plant using organic waste, which not only can give you cooking gas but can be converted in to electricity. We have succeeded to collect methane gas. Except few materials , majority of house hold materials are recyclable , and biodegradable, so our concept for Swachhbharat shall be awareness among the people at root level, segregation and recycling at root level except few items . so easy for Govt to handle less waste . With sincere request to everyone joined this mission ,try to see your dust bin ,what waste we are dumping, you will feel that out of that ,80 % of materials can be sold to local Bhangarwala/Paper Walla, some are biodegradable which I said can be depose off by putting biogas unit or other similar alternatives. if we take the thing seriously ,there will be no or little materials to be taken as waste. There is no word like WASTE in our planet . We should know how to use it and how to recycle it to our requirements. Only thing is that awareness and education is require from root level. Thanks.

We need to recognise that ignorance & lack of education & lack of awareness are the reasons for poor cleanliness. I would suggest flg. to overcome this problem Colour code need be used. Four colours be designated as under: RED: Plastics – bags, cups, plates, glasses, containers etc. – All non-biodegradables YELLOW: All recycleables – paper, cardboards, wooden, glass items etc. BLUE: Biodegradables - vegetables, kitchen waste etc. GREEN: Industry useful like materials for power generation or biogas etc. These four coloured containers (large BINS ) maybe kept initially at strategic locations ( with clarity that ultimately every building, locality, Society, office etc. to have this progressively ). Four containers ( BINS ) – one in each colour mounted on a lockable fixed grounded stand will be kept at strategic locations as mentioned above. Manufacturers of all Plastics must be mandated to put a RED sign on every single product made by them. Similarly for Paper, cardboard etc. a YELLOW sign put. Even an illiterate, will easily understand & feel proud to put the waste item in relevant BIN. Slowly this will become a habit. Further, scavengers are seen scourging thrown garbage for anything of value & throwing the rest around. Another advantage of colour coding would be that they will know where to look for items of their interest & at the same time it will instill awareness in them.
