US-India trade arrangement on Medical Devices: What People Want...

The subject of how medical devices should be priced in India so they can be affordable and yet premium medical devices are also available to those who want them has been discussed in this circle since 2017. Below are the results of the circle survey on the subject which indicates that the Govt should bring basic versions of all devices under price cap. At the same time, the survey indicates that people want premium products should be priced under the trade margin capping so those who want them can do so without being profiteered upon. Below is the full report:

Price Cap for Basic; Trade Margin Cap for Premium - Say Citizens

Aren't these medical devices available here in India and if not then, why doesn't India make these devices here, perhaps with American technology transfer, training and oversight to avoid overpriced medical devices or overcharging of customers in need of medical treatment. Importing involves many costs that are charged to customers after exorbitant fees and margins are computed into the cost of each device. This can make medical treatment more expensive than affordable. Making these devices in India serves two causes: (1) it gels perfectly into the PM's campaign promise to increase Make In India products, goods and services; (2) for the consumers, which is the PM's audience, the cost of local branded devices that are U.S. certified in quality, will still be much more affordable than imported devices. more
Prices are best kept lowest only. There is rampant cartelisation and referral fees in every industry. Let organisations who have the spirit of service-only win the contracts.. more
A MRP can be fixed based on a % above the landed cost of the devises. more
Price cap must be only for basic devices otherwise advanced devices would simply not be available. Moreover, this would lead to retaliation in trade matters. WTO has fixed max tariss that a country could impose in the country's schedule. Breaching that costs a great deal. more
The approval for these could be stringent but should not cost more. Presently this makes the initial prises up. more
