Unhealthy Packaged Foods: Warning in color instead of Star Rating needed

Many of you remember how LocalCircles with your inputs escalated to the Government the need to create awareness amongst consumers about consuming less of high fat, sugar and salt foods through their identification.

While India's food regulator, FSSAI, did move forward with our demand, instead of having warning and coloured labels it has proposed a star rating system which will be very hard to understand for most commoners. In this regard, LocalCircles had conducted a survey in which many of you participated. Below is the survey link which has been escalated to senior leadership of the Government by LocalCircles:

Labeling of Unhealthy Packaged Foods

You are also encouraged to share the same with your whatsapp contacts, social media so the approach can be changed. Do remember, this is about our next generations and needed so we don't have a diabetes, obesity and hear disease pandemic in the coming decades.

We look forward to any of your inputs on the subject! more

Since most of the public litrated, knowing about the unhealthy packaged foods, public should not buy. Till few years all soft drink manufacturers were claiming by consuming such drinks, children how tall, bones of ladies become stronger, which, now disappeared from media and telecasting. As long as corruption exists in the country, furious food products presence in open market exist. more
It's really important to make a visible warning on food packets that are not good for health to consumers or such food should be banned strictly. In India, nearly 50% consumers consume food regularly in open market, but there is no check on it. So better to think of such issue judiciously. more
Warning sign would work better istead of writing them on the packets in small letters in english or any other language, as majority of our consumers are illiterate and even most of the literate consumers seldom go through spend a little while to know about the products they are purchasing. However, it would be more useful if the contents are written in brief besides the signs. more
“CHAT” is one food which is liked by majority of people, educated or uneducated, old or young, rich or poor. It is sold and consumed in restaurant as well as on road side. At most of places it is prepared in a very unhygienic way. Despite all that no one complain about it and our food authorities are therefore appear to be happy to let the “chat” being sold at any place or in any manner. In case food authorities are scared of taking any harsh action, they can at least ensure that “ Chat” is prepared and served in an hygienic way and not on road side. more
As long as foods are allowed to be sold on road sides on thelas, expecting expecting hygenic foods from such food vendors would be too much. Such foods are initially prepared in their homes in a very dirty & unhygenic condition/situation. One even doesn't know the the kind of water they used in preparing such foods but people relish to eat standing on road side. Untill the consumers themselves take care of their own health, no rule or laws would work. more
FSSAI is doing a great job with packaged foods but is absent from the scene when it comes to hawkers and street food, which is consumed by the vast majority of the population. more
