Transplant instead of cutting! Cutting trees to make way for civil construction? No need, transplant the trees. A tree converts water from the soil into oxygen and water vapor, apart from cooling down the environment. For traditional wood based cremations, so even as a moral obligation, we must plant trees. Trees need nurturing naturally and what they return. Choking out trees replacing th with potted plants, which is still better than a paved land occupied by a car or man made object that for the sake of modern convenience pollutes. See for evidence the global or Delhi's warming, particularly with fast way water being depleted. The roots in the attached chinar tree covered with soil. That should be how we preserve a tree rather than tiling around causing choking.

A good percentile of trees per head in developed countries is an exercise over decades carried in a planned manner. In India, the way we propose planting trees by non-officials it will be extremely haphazard. I see on the Delhi roadsides people have planted trees of Peepal & Bargad most haphazardly without knowing and appreciating that such trees grow into huge sizes and foliage reducing the room sizes of the roads. Besides, such trees also more a source of constructing temples under these trees and employment in the name of tree worship. It is going to be a rather abuse of tree plantation. Peepal, Bargad and Neem must be planted in a planned manner and see that these underneath is not occupied by religious bigots.
