Standards for Cosmetics
A large number of spurious cosmetics are selling in the market. Does BIS have standards for eyeliners, lipgloss, lip stick, make up etc. Some of these have caused permanent harm in a few cases and such standards need to me mandatory. Please give your views and BIS please share standards if any? more

I doubt, whether cosmetics will be covered by BIS. These items may come under health department. more

The BIS cannot frame rules for cosmetics as it falls under Drug/Health regulators which are already virtually non-functional due to corruption and non-accountability in every State. If these 2 institutions start randomly checking/testing all consumables being sold in the market, all sub standard, fake, spurious products will disappear from the market. There is need to fix the accountability of all officials and link salaries to monthly performance to weed out lax and corrupt ones for the benefit of consumers. more

Since this component is made of chemicals and applied to the sensitive portion of the skin there can issue of allegy to some people hence it must have details of the chemicals and also if some harmful chemicals are there then it must be clearly mentioned more

I would advise all women to shun synthetic products and opt for traditional herbal make up. more

DEAR SEEMA: THERE ARE N NUMBER OF RULES AND REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS PRESCRIBED BY GOVT FOR NOT ONLY COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES BUT ALSO FOOD ITEMS IN THE GOVT'S RUE BOOK BUT, " THEY ARE SELDOM ENFORCED OR IMPLEMENTED" SOME OF THE SCRUPLOUS TRADERS IMPORT FANCY SOUNDING EYELINERS, LIPGLOSS, LIPSTICK AND OTHER MAKE UP KITS FROM FOREIGN SUPPLIERS AT 'DIRT CHEAP' PRICES AND OFFLOAD THEM IN MANY RURAL AND URBAN MARKET AT FANCY MARGINS. THERE HAVE BEEN CASES OF PEOPLE GOING BLIND AFTER THE USE OF THESE EYELINERS BUT, THERE HAVE BEEN 'NIL' CONVICTIONS ON THE SALE OF SUCH PRODUCTS TO GULLIBLE RURAL CONSUMERS. MY SIMPLE ADVICE IS " PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY OF THE IMPORTED PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU ARE SURE OF ITS MANUFACTURERS ORIGIN AND THEIR CREDIBILITY. " more
