Some general views on how to improve security in gated communities

1) The In gate desk must follow the procedure of calling land line/intercom of resident
and if not reachable, mobile phone of the resident. If still not reachable, a guard or gun men should accompany the visitor. They should never be sent alone.

2) Most security violation issues occur either during the shift change time or the night shift.
Training for those supervisors/guards must be beefed up followed by adherence to
defined process/procedure.

3) Vendors and brokers sometimes still pay their way into apartment societies in India. Yes,
very surprising but happens. It must be stopped and should be a firing offence for the security guard, supervisor and company.

4) Any vendor can enter the complex to supply goods/services to one flat and
then find his way to a different tower/flat. The guys
manning the basements or towers need to become more active and randomly question folks in
suspect so this is minimized.

I welcome everyone thoughts on this. If all add to it may be we can have standard best practices that can be picked from...

Thoughtful points. One I would like to add is that are the guards paid enough or do security companies keep majority of what residents pay in their bill. more
Also, thinking about it a bit more. Has anyone seen a security protocol manual? If you have it and its not confidential, please share. With something like that we can dramatically hold security companies more accountable.. more
. I was just shocked to read what happened with Alstom India President, a resident of my sector (44). Great ideas flowing here. On the subject of mobile usage/ensuring guards don't sleep on duty by Mr. Jha, does anyone have any ideas how? I have seen these violations many times in my complex Pearl Gateway more
Mr. Taparia and Mr. Srivastava: Nice ideas from both of you. One area where I'd like to comment on is that there has to be a limitation on the amount of mobile phones guards can use and some check/balance to ensure that night shift guards are not sleeping. Please share what have you seen work in your respective communities? more
Nice ideas Sumit. I believe if these alone are implemented with diligence, they can make a big difference. Another one to consider is: 5) Orienting service providers/vendors when events are held within the gated communities. Most of the contractors who come for catering/tenting services etc are subcontractors with no background checks and can be security threat for residents at times. It is very important for the resident (organizing the event) to define the protocol and what's not acceptable with the service providers and ensuring they stay within these boundaries. I am sure others will have more points to add.. more
