Critical routes have single track - Wadi to Pune, Guntakal - Bangalore . Four south Indian states have to share one track for going coming ! This is due to the pressure of the private bus lobby which run hundreds of buses . In 35 years, train timing from Hyderabad to Mumbai has not come down by even one minute. In 1980 bus used take 5 hours more than train. Today volvo bus takes 5 hours less than train ! It is shame that train speed > 40 kmph is express and greater than 66 kmph is superfast . Show one country where the railways are run like this . There are more than 200 gardeners in Intergal Coach Factory , Chennai. Are u producing roses or railway bogies ? I have seen a documentary where 400 people produce high quality bogies which 15000 employees of ICF cannot do. Another documentary , a fully laded goods wagon , hot axle is removed replaced by just three people in under 10 minutes . High class equipment , high class technology is the answer. Unless the various departments like traffic , mechanical are abolished there is no future for IR. After double track electrification, what more can IR do ? You have to improve signalling, track, bogie design such that a journey of 1000 kms is completed in 10 hours. Reduction of journey time through induction of world class technology is the only solution . Less travel time -> less food -> less visit to toilets, less complaints about vendors, more income to IR . All the best Suresh Prabhu Ji, you are the last hope of IR.

You may please add one important factor--That is people working, coming into contact with Railways think that since it is a Government organization, it is not essential that it has to generate profits. Government is responsible for running the trains at a cheaper rate, providing for all employees however much they are incapable. Since profit making is not the intent competitiveness is safely ripped off and hence this state of affairs. So unless we change the attitude of all these people including workers, travelers, officers, policy makers, political parties and general public, nothing is going to change. Review system should be in vogue. Concrete expectations and targets should be penned so that we can expect them to bring results.
