Privatisation of Railways without consultation
I am surprised to read that the Railways is mulling a plan to allow private operators to run trains on several important routes like Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Jammu/Katra, Delhi-Howrah, Secunderabad-Hyderabad, Secunderabad-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai and Howrah-Mumbai.
Also, private players will now run intercity express trains and suburban trains in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Secunderabad.
If this will be done be providing tickets at the same price, its ok. If we will be paying much higher rates - I want to know why there was no consultation done on this matter by Railways.
Naysayers said some time back, the Modi Govt will privatise everything. I didn't believe them. Show me the goodness here Mantri sahib.
Why Govt jobs are being privatised? This needs introspection.1)What is the net output of a Govt Servant vis a vis a private servant?2)By reservation system we have curtailed the quality in Govt system vis a vis private system.3)Unionism in Govt is very much strong and is always counter productive, and always protects inefficient worker vis a vis in private job where there is no union and inefficient worker do not have any place in private jobs.4)Political interference is always there in Govt work and most of the time it is counter productive.5)A typical Govt servant need not do actual work and still can survive by adopting all other work like union/sports social ,cultural etc.6)Govt work is more of social in nature where as private is real business oriented. These are some of the reasons I can think of and if these are corrected probably Govt can perform better.

The government while running these private trains, have not declared that the trains already running will be stopped. People can still use the normal trains at normal fares. Secondly, government has said there will be regulation of fares. On one hand people complain about services offered by railways, at the same time they do not to pay for better service. Let there be competition. When LIC was a monopoly, we had very bad service from them, which improved only after private players came in. Same is case with Air India, tax payers money is bring utilised to keep it alive. MTNL, wiremen still ask for bribes, when a complaint is loved for non functioning land limes. Visit MTNL office, employees inherently come at least an hour later to office. Government servants become complacent due to strong worker unions and permanent job status, under any circumstances.

Saroj Deb. 100% I have experienced very good quality food after privatisation in trains. Ofcourse quantity is reduced, but quality is more important than quantity

It is not the employees but management failure. It is the governing bodies and the boards (Majority of members are politicians) that take decision and actually run the show. Now that politicians will get rid of running a flop show and by awarding contract will do some further manuover. How in Indira Gandhi's era trains were running in time and most of the Govt. undertakings were making profit?
Catering has been privatised, has it been really improved?

It is not good foreboding to the country. Central government seems to be washing off its hands of citizen friendly activities and decided to follow the American model which makes the rich richer and the poor poorer at the cost of the poor. They should stop privatising important national activities like transport, telecom etc. God save us

I quite agree with Mr Chatterjee. There was a time when telephones were solely under Govt control. It was considered a luxury at that time. See what has happened after it was liberalised and private players were allowed. Prices have fallen, service has improved, and BSNL is on the brink of collapse. Just shows Govt can not and should not do business. As Mr Chatterjee said, except in special cases Govt should sell off all public sector enterprises like HMT, BHEL, BEML, ICF, RWF etc. It will make these units far more efficient and better products will come out.
