Myopia or nearsightedness

Myopia is the refractive anomaly wherein parallel rays of light come to a focus in front of the retina. The myope, to whom distant objects appear blurred, attempts to see clearly by screwing up the eyelids. A myope sees near objects clearly. School, or study myopia, has been associated with excessive near work. And progressive pathological myopia may be associated with serious complications.

Besides spectacles and contact lenses (preferably GP lenses in youngsters to slow down the progression of myopia) for correction of simple myopia, the patient is advised fresh air, outdoor activities, balanced diet, holding of reading material at about one foot distance, and glare-free lighting. Laser refractive surgery in moderate degree of myopia (once it has stabilized) may be considered on the advice of your ophthalmologist.

“All high myopes should have their fundi examined, yearly, with ophthalmoscope, as retinal detachment is a common cause of loss of vision in these cases. Immediate ophthalmic consultation is also advised if one notices floaters, flashes, or cloudiness in front of the eyes, and if there is sudden reduction in vision”, says ophthalmologist Dr. Maneesh Kumar of OphthaCare Eye Centre. more

If there is any association of opthalmologists, they should communicate with the education ministry and exert some pressure on them to advise all educational institutions to incorporate a topic on good and practicable suggestion to all students. more
Thanks indeed to both Dr Rajender Sharma and Shri Durga Prasad for their practical suggestion of incorporating basic eye care information in school-going children's books. I must add that my book "Babloo goes for an eye test" for students, teachers and parents covers similar tips in a simple, story-type presentation with ample illustrations, and has been donated to several schools in Delhi. And, my another publication "I care for eye care" bookmark, covering information in simple language (with illustrations) on (i) refractive error, (ii) cataract, (iii) diabetic retinopathy, and (iv) preventive eye care, can be collected free-of-charge by anyone from Ophthacare Eye Centre (C2C/236A Janakpuri) any working day between 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm. more
