Mumbai ‘s periodical inundation problems-lessons to be learned by others .
Every year the flooding of all streets in Mumbai old and new is a grim reminder that all is not well with our urban planners .
Corruption, lack of expertise , appointment of non qualified people and research in municipalities are the causes.
IAS officers appointments to the top is not the answer .All state governments over years have milked the municipalities due to heavy tax collections and increased urbanisation .
They have neglected appointment of highly appropriate teams for expansion plans ,civic plans and infrastructural needs and has only done firefighting untill the advent of next election.
Soon the prediction to low level cities facing rising levels of sea like mumbai, countries like Bangladesh,Maldives, Indonesia of submerging is likely to happen.Heavy rains will worsen the scene in addition.
They need Proper planning ,stopping of reclamation of river ,sea, tank beds and proper planning of drainage system, storm water drains, refusing permission for real estate expansion at the cost of agriculture and spending on infrastructure at war footing .
The present white elephant municopalities must be decentralised and corrupt, lazy and inefficient staff to be sent on VRS.Stoppage of funds for municipal councillor’s as quota is the cause for mis appropriation of funds and bad condition of infrastructure.
This a wake up call for this decade .jaihind.
Do you think our Politicians have any eye on common man Problems. Most of the time Vote catching activities and big projects where they get Money buying the MLAs and making Government stable. Keeping flock together. I am worried this country going in the route of Venezuela. Unfortunately the System needs great repairs to allow the person at the helm of affairs to do some good. I am not happy with all around Corruption from Voter to ruler to Executive to Judiciary to Media - Where are we leading this country.

This situation is almost everywhere in most of the cities. The reasons are: 1. Unplanned growth 2. Encroachments supported by politicians and corrupt bureaucrats 3. Irresponsible citizen throwing all garbage including plastics into the drains 4. Climatic changes inducing heavy concentration of rains over a smaller area The only way is to control the so called development and go back to basic living, even if it means travelling a step backward. Remember, 20-30 years ago we were happier than today. Then what is the meaning of development and what for we want it?

it reminds me of a saying...giving key to thief! who will appoint professionals not IAS, IPS , uneducated politicians to head organisations, departments! who will check the properties of such people? and often, common man joins the thief!!!

Control urbanisation. Provide urban facilities in rural. Will reduce corruption. Improve infrastructure.

There should be accountability. Not only the irresponsible officers of the municipality but also the elected representatives of the public, should be penalized severely, and not allowed to hold office for a minimum period of 5 years.
