Multivitamins? Isn’t there a bottle there in your closet, waiting to be picked up so that you can have your daily dose? And in some enthusiastic people, the second dose in fact? And how did the bottle get there? I suppose it’s placed there because some doctor prescribed it to you along with a prescription meant for something else? Or maybe you got it because you decided that a pill a day won’t harm you. It will only enhance your working in a hectic working schedule. It’s safe after all, with no bad effects, right? Well, think again. Here’s some food for thought- Problem 1- Vitamin supplements have disadvantages when compared to obtaining the same nutrients through your diet. Whole foods encompass a number of different vitamins, whereas if you take a vitamin C supplement, you only obtain vitamin C and are missing a number of other essential vitamins. Besides, unlike vitamin pills, foods have fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals that improve your health and ward off diseases. • Fiber is a substance derived from food that helps to clear out and regulate your intestinal tract. It is also filling, which helps decrease appetite, and soluble fibers play a role in lowering blood cholesterol. • Phytonutrients are chemical substances in foods that likely protect against certain types of cancer and cardiovascular disease. They are found in a variety of foods including fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Problem 2- The disadvantage of taking vitamin supplements is with cost. In reality, preparing a well balanced, nutritious and healthy meal is by far less expensive than taking supplements. Excess multivitamins are only going to be flushed out of your system. They simply will not be retained. A loss to time, effort and money. Problem 3- There are two different types of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble. Extra water-soluble vitamins leave the body in urine, with the exception of vitamin B12, which is stored in the body. All fat-soluble vitamins stay in the body, resulting in overdosing. You cannot overdose yourself by eating foods that contain vitamins. Some of the effects of overdosing of some specific vitamins are given below: • Vitamin A: Ringing in the ears, blurred vision, loss of hair, nausea, menstrual irregularities, bone problems, skin rash, headache, irritability, apathy and even stupor. • Vitamin B3: Faintness, peptic ulcer, hyperglycemia, dizziness, gout amongst others. • Vitamin B6: Numbness in limbs, walking problems, abnormal sense of position and vibration and even problems with memory and depression. • Vitamin C: Kidney stone, gastrointestinal problems, oral ulcers. • Vitamin D: Deafness, nausea, loss of appetite, tiredness, weak bones, hypertension and high cholesterol, kidney stones, and mental health problems. • Vitamin E: This is one of the vitamins taken as a part of beauty tips? Read on what it causes- muscle weakness, hypertension, tenderness of the breast and slow healing of wounds. Vitamin E is also one of the primary nutrients which has great potential to interact with certain medications. This nutrient may increase risk of blood clotting in people taking anti-clotting drugs, may interact with chemotherapy or radiation therapy and has the capacity to lessen the effectiveness of certain cholesterol-lowering medications. • Some fat soluble vitamins, when stored, can cause health issues such as birth defects. Taking vitamins alone, like taking vitamin B alone is more detrimental than taking it in combination with other vitamins. Problem 4- NCCAM notes that vitamin supplements can interact negatively with other medications you are taking, as already mentioned, an example is Vitamin E. Problem 5- They are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the same way medications are. (FDA is the agency that keeps monitoring the safety of drugs) Problem 6- The main drawback to taking vitamins and supplements is that they are heavily relied on and give the vitamin-takers a false sense of security. There is still a lot of research that needs to be done to confirm the effectiveness of certain vitamin supplements. Many people take them with the assumption that they will work just as well as natural nutrients from foods. In reality, supplements are manmade more
