Maximizing Election Participation: Inputs Sought

Within 6 weeks, 5 states of India i.e. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram will be voting to elect their State Governments. In early 2019, the nation will be voting to elect its next Central Government. To ensure that this happens effectively, it is critical that voting in elections is maximized to ensure the best and most deserving candidates get elected to govern.

Below are some inputs from one of our members on how this can be done. You are requested to review them and share yours on what can be done to maximize participation of citizenry in elections. Also share issues you have faced in recent state or last Lok Sabha elections.

How can voting be maximized:

a. A CCTV may be installed at the entrance of the electoral booths to identify the people who have cast their vote.
b. Election booths should be in Schools/Colleges with a vicinity of 2-3 kms.
c. A time slot may be fixed for area-wise, apartment-wise, road-wise to pick-up/drop people at the election booths to cast their votes (to avoid long queues).
d. The Youth may be motivated to help the old/handicapped people in casting their votes.
e. A short documentary may be telecasted repeatedly on all Television Channels to trigger people to cast their votes
f. Voter id creation process should be made completely online (with Aadhaar or other validation) and Voter id card for new voters must be timely delivered.
g. An Application to link the Non-voters could be generated and released. more

I suggest following measures for maximising voting: 1. Don't declare polling day as holiday. Instead, let the employers give 2-3 hours time off to facilitate employees to cast their vote. Declaring holiday doesn't serve purpose, people got for outing without casting their vote. 2. Let there be a facility for online voting. Because not all citizens stay at the same place where their name is registered. more
The Government has to use the Media (TV) and SMS, Tell people the positive things that are happening in the country, encourage citizens to come out and exercise their rights and elect the candidates of their choice. All the time propagating negative news makes people hopeless --"Kya hoga?", "Kuchh nahin badlega", ""Mere ek vote se kya fark padta hai?" ... more
Citizen were kept away from knowledge of their Rights and Constitutional Provisions. Even now to be made aware more
We should not wait for the good to come, but we must bring good and if we all start voting, then only good will come, so lets take first step of voting always. We must encourage every one and educated masses to go for voting too, by sending messages. Once the voting gets higher, things will improve and better candidates will also come and we must create criteria of voting for-- Clean image candidates Candidates who are result oriented Avoid family owned parties at all costs What the nation need is people who think of country first before them and things will surely improve JAGO BHARAT JAGO more
In view of maximising voters to participate: [1] Cancellation of Voter ID and benefits of fundamental rights should be withdrawn if a person fails to cast vote twice in continuation. [2] Rs.1000 should be transferred to linked account of Voter by the Government within three days of casting vote. This amount is towards expenses incurred by a voter to reach a polling booth. [3] Voters who get registered themselves for online voting they should be allowed with a password to be generated by individuals through a security system. No amount to be paid to such voters as suggested above in point [2]. Registration should be opened at least seven days before the date of polling. more
There has to be proper rules for a candidate to contest elections. It should be neat and clean. No criminals should be allowed.Education level should be properly defined. more
