Margin on Expiry Date

I read the post of Shalini on expiry date. In some western countries, many companies follow practice where 25% bonus period is there on products when it comes to shelf life. So a product made on Feb 15 will likely be good till March 8th but co. will put March 1 as expiry date.

Can the same be implemented in India. Like to hear everyone's thoughts/experiences and from FSSI. more

It is not advisable to follow this system in India. In US and other European countries have very strict norms and the additional shelf life is available on point of sale in addition to proper established product recall procedure. But in India this 25% is already utilized by the manufacturer in his process itself since labelling and coding in most cases is done before dispatch. Many medium and small scale manufacturers do not have facility to do a proper shelf life study and depend on external laboratories. In my opinion it is not advisable to follow this in INdia more
I think Shikha's suggestion is brilliant. The best before date can be 25% period extra before expiry date. Also that should qualify for a discount and removed from the shelf to the 'near expiry items' shelf. more
Well, we must no the practices followed by other countries in giving the label information on the packaged commodities, particularly the food items, whether in cold, hot or tropical humid countries as India has all the weathers in its length and breadth. Regarding 25% of grace period on the shelf life of eatables whether in loose or packaged, it is a good idea. And, I do believe that in India also this practice is followed though not mentioned specifically. However, I would expect the Govt of India in the Department of Consumer Affairs to throw light on this aspect of packaging. Remember, even if the shelf life is mentioned on the label of a packaged commodity along with the storage conditions - certain products e.g. medicines, do get stored in humid and unhygienic conditions leading to contamination, decomposition, or damaged. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the departmental stores who do retail selling that the packaged commodities are stored in an appropriate environment. The medicines requiring certain temperatures for its shelf life, must be kept in the refrigerated racks. more
