Mandatory Hallmarking suggestion accepted

Seems like the consumer affairs ministry has accepted our suggestion and new norms have been issued making hallmarking mandatory. the new draft notification specifies that the new norm will make it compulsory for retail outlets to get certification and get all gold products above 2 grams hallmarked before selling them. These shall be sold only by registered jewellers through certified sales outlets after fulfilling conditions for precious article of gold names gold jewellery and gold artefacts.

items that are less than two gram, meant for export, to be used for medical, dental or industrial purpose and gold bullion in shape of bar, plate, sheet or foil would be exempted from getting the hallmark.

Totally support this move by consumer affairs ministry. However one concern we have is what is the process of licensing and enforcement. How will you ensure this is complied upon is hundreds of small towns and cities or is that consultation u will be having with us.

As we are aware of the fate of ISI & ISO marks and the fact that ISI/ISO marks stickers are freely available in our markets and the traders do not hesitate to put these stickers even on China made items provided 'made in China' is not embeded in their bodies, I don't think there is any reason for us to cheer up. Incidentally, hallmarked jewelleries are available even now right from the bigest shops to the smallest one. Unless the government is sincere in ensuring that the new rules are implemented in the right perspective and are not allowed to be meted out with the same fate of its various other schemes, the new rules are unlikely to be of beneficial for the consumers.
The new norms of making hallmarking mandatory is a welcome feature.
THANKS FOR INITIATION
Good move. Should be followed up by good implementation.
Very good. A system will develop to cater the need of small towns and villages.
