Making Unmanned Railway Crossings Safer
1. Through mass media/awareness creation campaigns, it should be communicated that trains have right of way on the rail tracks
2. Unmanned crossings should be made automatic with the help of sensors
3. Alternatives by-ways of over bridge or subway should be made available for commuters
4. Some kind of alarm should be sounded when the train is approaching
5. Warning boards with pictures and street lights should be installed at all such crossings
6. Speed breakers should be built on either side of the railway crossing
7. Local Police, NGOs and Community should be roped in to educate people about the precautions while crossing unmanned crossings
8. Media should also be used to generate awareness, especially in rural areas
9. It should be made mandatory for the trains to blow horn before an unmanned crossing
10. Till the awareness campaigns are effective, local police should fine violators to drive compliance
Most of this is RTA's job on educating the public to live and let live on the roads.

In many Rly. Level crossings it is seen when the Gate opened /cross bar is lifted, all types of vehicles as well as pedestrians waiting on both sides rush forward, and thereby at the middle of the Level crossing track traffic congestion and traffic bottleneck takes place and it takes lot of time to clear this condition. This is dangerous since some times next train happens to come within 10 or 15 minutes and the Gate could not be closed and vehicle and men movement is going on. This should be sorted out and the railway should device some better model for Level crossing so that in the unmanned gates such condition should not happen.

Level crossing can be easily monitored from the nearest station by CCTV. Closing/opening of gates, loudspeaker announcement, switch on / off of green and red lights for both rail and road user can be done from the station thus obviating the need to post 3 gate men for each level crossing -a major item of expenditure for maintaining the level crossing. The connection between the level crossing and station can be established either by a VHF wireless link or a coaxial cable. Feb 13
