Individual Income Tax Date Extension

Thanks LocalCircles for escalating this ask. One less thing to worry about.

Tax dept in last 3 years has become progressive. We should discuss positive experience of people with IT dept and negative experiences in this period and then LC should compile and share with them.

It can drive more change and weed out corruption. more

Very well said, things mustbe made online for most services and things will surely improve, its urgent need to make things online for most government departments, approvals and processes to make things easier for masses more
The extension of date of submission of ITR for AY 20-21 is causing loss to senior citizens. Earlier date of depositing self assessment tax for senior citizen was upto any date before last date of filing return. Since date of submission of ITR was extended upto 30 Nov 20 and now 31 Dec 20, the senior citizens thought that they could deposit self assessment tax by 30Nov/31Dec 20. But IT department is charging interest from senior citizens under section 234A, 234 B and 234 C on account of self assessment tax being deposited in Sep, Oct 2020. The Govt did not clarify this issue at the time of extension of date of submission of ITR. Hence senior citizens have been deceived by the government overtly or covertly. more
My experience dealing with IT Dept. has been very good in recent years, very many thanks to digitization. Surely a lot can be improved, but it is the first small step. Hopefully, it will get better and better with learnings of lessons. There are times when individual Returns processing falls outside of digital. In such a situation, the corruption begins. It did happen to me back in late 2000. I don't remember all the details, but it had something to do with a convoluted, and confusing, missing of a deadline. So, it fell outside of digital processing. This was in Chennai IT Branch. The ITO was dragging her feet. One time when I called her, she handed off the phone to one of her thugs. The thug asked me to come into his office and he would immediately attend to this matter. When I explained that I live outside India, he still insisted that I come to his office. Really??? My tax consultant didn't, or couldn't, help me either. He was dragging his feet too. It went on until 2013. Out of sheer frustration, I submitted a RTI. A comment about RTI: Since I am a NRI, I could not submit a RTI. So, I had to go through my niece. I looked up the objective of RTI. That article explained that one of the benefits of RTI is to reduce corruption. If so, why exclude NRI from submitting RTI. Anyway, after I submitted a RTI through my niece, I got my refund after 30 days. And the IT dept. did not compute interest on my refund it held for about 5 years. more
IT Dept. should be concerned about the income generated in India. If there is a question about the Property outside can probe no doubt . When there is proof that it has been accumulated befoere landing in India, it shouldnt be of any concern. But even after landing in India if money has multiplied it is the concerns of the country where the property is. But there should be proper explanation for big amounts that have been added. more
