Drainage in Urban India - Solutions
1. Major drains could be covered and parks/parking spaces could be created over them
2. The municipality should make sure that there are no open drains in their area
3. The drainage system should be redesigned
4. The drainage pipes and the drinking water lines should be laid at a certain distance from each other
5. People should be educated about not dumping solid waste in drains
6. Desilting of the drains should be done 2-3 times every year
7. Street vendors should be fined if they are found throwing garbage into drains
8. The waste collected after cleaning the drains should be disposed properly
9. Capacity of the drains should be increased
10. Sewage system should be separated from storm water system.
Drainage in Urban India – Root Causes
1. Drainage system is not well planned
2. Drains are not cleaned regularly
3. There is no regular check of blockages inside water pipes/bridges and holes
4. Small drains are not connected to the bigger ones properly
5. Up gradation of the drainage system is not done keeping the population growth in mind
6. The solid waste thrown in the drains blocks the flow and results in overflowing of the drains
7. Plastics and polythene choke the drains
8. Capacity of the drains is weak which gets fully tested during rains
9. Many drains become stagnant which become a breeding ground for insects and mosquitoes
10. Most municipal departments are lazy and ineffective and lack processes/expertise
11. Complaint redressal system is very bad
12. Solid wastes which are put besides drains after cleaning that again flows back to the drains
13. Manhole covers are stolen
14. Construction plans are passed without a proper drainage plan
15. Lack of storm drains.

Regarding drainage -- if corruption goes -- drains which have gown underground will be found with which drainage system will improve and flooding will be finished or reduced. All depends with eradication of corruption, this is again connected with teaching of civic sense.

Is muncipal authority going to do this? answer NO. They are busy serving the slums and non tax payers thinking that tax payers are fools. Very good solutions are given above. I would like to say that please start fine / challan on every garbage throwing in the drainage. No education can change any Indian either educated or uneducated. This I can say for sure. I have seen through my eyes there is no effect on student, youth, or old people of swachatha abhiyaan, They feel they have RIGHT to throw garbage on the road. So only challan and fine can tight their screws. The challan and fine can be imposed on RWA/ housing societies / House / Apartment - whenever any supervisor found garbage in front of the these, can charge a challan on that building. Indian baaton se sudherane wale nahi he.
