Gurgaon problems 2: Autos
Auto rickshaws are plying on Gurgaon roads for some time now but without any guideline or control. They misuse people situation and charge whatever they feel like. Recently few pre-paid auto booths have been started by Gurgaon Police (appreciable step).
They contribute a lot to traffic congestion, by driving wrong side, park anywhere, can jump red light, and violate all traffic rules. Autos are big contributor to Huda city centre and other key point’s traffic chaos.
There are no identified auto stops across various locations of Gurgaon. So it is difficult for people to get autos near their house and even autos have to come back to Huda city center or such places. Because of that they charge more because they feel they will have to return empty and create more congestion at places like Huda city centre. Many mobile apps are there in the market but still it is big problem.
Below steps required by district administration and people may help up to some extent:
• Make meters (at least) and GPS mandatory in all autos to ply. All autos must stand in queue at all designated stops. Passenger just ride first auto in queue, meter down and no more discussion.
• Police must make some effective complaint system if auto doesn’t use meter, violate traffic rule or misbehave then people are encouraged to inform (through WhatsApp, facebook, email, localCircles etc) police.
• District administration, people and autos work together to designate auto stops across city. If possible some technological solution (like G-auto is coming, some phone number etc) may be brought in.
• Educate auto drivers to follow traffic rules, behave properly with passengers and ensure women safety. Some sticker may be placed in autos which have undergone such course (I am ready to volunteer) and sign a commitment to these points. They will get more business which can be motivator for them.
• The auto rickshaws are allowed to ply between Delhi and Noida but despite so much need they are not allowed to ply between Delhi and Gurgaon. An auto rickshaw can be better and cheaper conveyance for people going to places like airport but they have to hire 3-4 times costly taxis. District administration must ensure autos to ply between Delhi and Gurgaon.

This is not to justify what auto drivers are doing. I'm absolutely against traffic rule breaking. But I've seen, not drivers, but Educated owners driving their big cars on wrong side ! how do you educate them ? This is not an awareness issue, it's an attitude issue. One solution is heavy fines n ruthless without discrimination implementation. Even at random. Why nobody drops even a cigarette butt on the roadside in Singapore is because the fine is a few hundred dollars. Why NOBODY jumps a red light in Europe is because the fine is 300 to 500 Euros ! Make the fine truly penal & people fall in line. Even Indians who go to Europe don't jump red lights there. The penalty on VW for cheating on emission norms is going into Billions of USD. Delhi govt initiated the ban on Maggie & in competition the Centre govt had to take it on & it got banned from the whole country ! It's possible. You need the political will. & initiatives from people like you ! more

We lack civic sense,so we face it .people shud obey rules & advise others &expose the violaters.strong social moves needed. more

It's common in Gurgaon, Auto drivers drive in wrong side. I experienced it many times. Many times I tell the drivers to follow traffic rules, which they never listen. Only the traffic police can regularise the nuisance. It's possible if every citizen raise the issue. more
