GST Issues

We were at a hotel recently and check out was a mess due to GST migration. I know local circle has sought some feedback on supply of goods, services problems etc but I think an open discussion on GST is warrented where anyone can share any experience that is odd and possible indicator of a bigger problem coming.

Most of us agree that this is a great move for the country but lets open it up and hear from all.

Some businesses will have trouble, some will shut down, some new ones will come up and some will enjoy high profits. Lets all share our honest view in this space and criticise as well with corrective intention.

I too totally agree with Dipak and Vaibhav. Let us keep it one tax rate. Secondly, 18% GST for Service Tax is tooooo high. Let us all get together and let the GST man know this. Everything will become dearer with the escalation of this tax.

This GST Bill must have been discussed in Parliament threadbare. But the Govt had brougt it as a money bill and bull dozed the bill without getting proper inputs from experts and critics.It is a welcome bill but the Govt in order to have its power has infact created a super licence raj by abolishing the previous indirect taxation laws and bringing this Law which has only penal provisions for Traders and no responsibility for the Taxmen even if there are excesses on their part to harrass the trader.

There should not be multiple rates of tax. It should be one rate for standalone restaurants/eating houses, and one rate for restaurants serving liquor( marginally higher by 2% or so. The rate for restaurants/eating houses should be generally low(not more than 10-12%

I agree that ordinary Eating Houses/Restaurants should have 12% service tax as they are for large sections of society. The restaurants serving liquor/five star hotels can charge 18% service tax.

The practice of charging Service charges should be abolished. Tipping should be purely voluntary.

I totally agree. Currently, as per my knowledge, alcohol is out of GST purview. Hence, one tax rate for restaurants is possible. As of now, all restaurants charge 18% irrespective of AC/non AC or alocohol/non alcohol. There is too much variation in the GST rate rules. Instead of simplicity it complicating matters even further. This will push people to again stay out of taxation by using cash only.

12%gst plus 5%service charge must be set for all restaurants except 5star where 18%plus10% may be set.

I got a helpful info from on GST on restaurants 5% -For restaurants declaring daily sales less than Rs 20,548 per day(Not to be printed in the bill?) 12% -For non AC restaurants declaring daily sales more than Rs 20,548 per day(Print in bill) 18%-AC restaurants with sales more than 20,548 per day(print in bill)
