Footpaths and bicycle paths are as important as Car lanes.
This is the capital of Germany, the country that invented automobile. They have smooth and wide footpath (side walk) and Bike paths nearly all over the city. We should have the same in our cities. Too many cars taking over the footpath area is unfair and dangerous. Some people in India even park on the footpaths., that must be stopped. Millions of people like myself do not own cars and want to walk or ride bicycles, what about their rights? A well designed city/town should provide at least 1/3 of the street width to the pedestrians and bicycle riders. We have to rethink what true development means. Certain things should learn from those who have already figured out the solutions.
Restrict number of cars, increase public transportation, encourage walking/biking- reduce pollution and live a healthy happy life.
Respect for all.
Me too from Bangalore sir, I want to highlight on the issue that, the road/footpath dug for any repair will be kept open. This will create a lot of problems to travelers. There are many issues come in news also about problems created due to road/footpath left dug after repair. Place where schools are there, during rainy season, kids will drain away. Please take some preventive measure. Put penalty to those departmental heads, who will incomplete the task.

Yes, thinking in missing now-a-days. Even Mohenjodaro and Haprappa had better planning. Polishing a #@$! is always harder. In a relatively newer city like Hyderabad, some super intelligent planners have planted trees exactly in the middle of the sidewalks and the side walks are one foot high with driveway drops every 20 meters. Very hard to use for pedestrians especially older people, women and children. But the citizens are very tolerant of the administration's incompetence. Some smart, sincere and honest people need to help plan the new cities. The worst thing is of course, the maintenance. We really have to learn to maintain well what we already have. That is something we can learn from some elderly actresses :)

I am writing this from Bangalore. This is supposed to be the garden city and once upon a time, a very clean city. Unfortunately today it is not, not at all. The roads are unplanned and most unsafe. The safest place for a person to be while on the roads here will be inside a transport bus. It is highly congested with uncontrolled traffic. The city has expanded because of IT firms; however, the government authorities appear to be oblivious of these developments. The number of speed breakers here in Bangalore city alone will be more that the total number in the entire country. It is a health hazard here. The road to many IT parks, for example, ITPL in Whitefield is highly congested, dirty and shabbily maintained. The approach to ITPL from all sides are yet remaining as undeveloped villages. Bangalore used to have wide footpaths once upon a time. Today it does not have. It is high time, the authorities opened their eyes and improve the roads and maintain cleanliness.

Most of the foot paths are occupied by vendors, vehicle parking, transformers, telephone switch box, power switch box etc leaving the pedestrians to walk on the road
