Food Safety in Kerala - Inputs Sought

We would like to seek your inputs on what are the various issues you see in regards to food safety in your city in Kerala. These could be in regards to packaged food, food product itself, restaurant hygiene levels, street food, adulteration, etc.
We would also look at how district food safety officials can be given access to the circle followed by a city level food safety/consumer circle in your city.

Vegetables and food items transported from other states, especially from Tamilnadu to Kerala are mostly adulterated, which goes off the view of the officials due to some legal loopholes between the state rules. More strict measures should be initiated to check the adulteration in food items. The introduction of another antidote for the adulteration by the Kerala Agricultural University initiated by the State Govt. is a matter to be thought in deep, as to my view, it should be seen as a failure on the part of the govt. to check the malpractices by the adulterants. more

Not only labs, the law itself is not clear. There are a set of toxins with permissible limits in the law. Outside this list exist a vast list of adulterants and toxins that are used to impair public health. When such toxins are detected, the lab doesn't have a law mandated list to compare or book permissible limits. Such cases are not accepted by courts to book culprits. So they borrow from limits imposed by US or Britain to inform through press. Why don't we ask the law ministry to fill in this gap in law by expanding the list of toxins and adulterants and give permissible thresholds. For eg: starch in tummeric powder is an adulterant in US law while starch powder is good in Indian law. Hello, We have been regularly hearing laments on the media that adequate facilities to test food stuff are not available in Kerala and consequently, samples have to be sent to private labs in Hyderabad and other places outside the state. This is difficult to understand, since it has been brought many times to the notice of the Food Safety officials (of Kerala) that the CEPCI Laboratory in Kollam, which besides holding FSSAI approval (as also NABL Accreditation) is one of the best equipped and staffed laboratories in south India. It is sad that such excellent facilities, in spite of being available locally goes unutilised.
