Food Safety in India - Key Issues
Dear Friends,
Food related illness is very common in India and we also experience quite high food related deaths. One painful example was deaths due to very high levels of pesticide found in a school lunch meal.
Today, with this post we request you to list all the issues that exist related to Food Safety.
Once we know the issues, we will follow our structured approach and review Root Causes and Solutions with a comprehensive whitepaper to be shared with the key stakeholders in the Government.

1. Harmful chemicals are injectd in fruits and vegetables in many cases, to enhance their size and weight. 2. Insecticides and pestisides are used on fruits and vegetables to ripe them early. 3. Eatables are sold in the market after their expiry dates also. In many cases the expiry date is also not correctly mentioned. 4. Loose Sweets and namkeens etc are not hyginically stored by Halwais and other vendors. Such items are sold even after their life is over. 5. Harmful chemicals are injected to buffalows and cows to get more quantity of milk.

Farmers use seeds which are genetically modified for a easy crop - like yielding in a short time, crop which does not attract insects, no weeds etc. Ultimately the effect comes during storage of the crop. To keep rice , dal lentils etc insect free , they spray pesticides at all stages. Specially green leaves. To control this, they should be a limit on the use of pesticides on the crops, proper seeds are to be for sale and not modified. All the crops should be tested and certified before selling.

Food Corporation of India has storage facilities across the country. Govt has an Act "Essential commodities Act" which I do not remember having used by Govt for the citizens of India. We also have FDA, an authority to take care of quality of food items. If these 3 components are implemented, citizens wouldn't face price rise of food items, Farmers would be a happy lot, Healthy and nutritious food would be matter of just availability. The problem lies in the implementation of above stated 3 initiatives. Deficit in implementation is a root cause.
