Food Quality in Railways - Inputs on Root Causes

Dear Friends,

Based on your inputs, here is a summary of key issues with Food in Railways.

1. Oil used in food is smelly
2. Pantry car is in a very unhygienic condition
3. Food is served cold
4. Chapatis are under-cooked
5. Tea bags are sub-standard
6. Water bottles served with broken seals
7. Presentation is bad – trays are wet and dirty
8. Pantry boys don’t wear a uniform or gloves
9. Trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani also serve sub-quality food
10. Utensils used are dirty
11. No proper place for food storage. Food trays kept on the floor
12. No way to provide feedback on food

If there is anything important missing, kindly add to it as a comment. Otherwise, let us list the Root Causes for these issues.

Once we have done that, we will identify solutions in a separate post.

Look forward to your inputs!

food served is not fresh. food is not fully cooked. service is very poor. sense of hygiene should be inculcated in the people who cook and serve. quality should be known to the cook and service providers. They should not display arrogance. more
best thing is to do like airlines , bring in prepared food from five star catering services and heat up in the pantry and serve . no need to cook in the pantry and make mess out of it.. more
The quality of food in trains are below standard but prices are high and it is just like cheating the passengers. This poor food quality spoiling the mood of passengers and the discomforts of coaches like cockroaches etc, delays of trains further accelerating. more
Pantry boys must be given a professional hospitality service etiquette training. Not all but some of these people just throw food packets onto your tray and just walk away. more
