Firecrackers and Public Safety

What has happened in Kollam this morning is extremely tragic. Fireworks, something that is supposed to mark celebrations led to the death of over 100 citizens and over 400 have been injured.

With this post, let us put our heads together to see if a policy can be framed on use of fireworks in public places.

Should fireworks be allowed in public places?
What kind of Govt approvals must be required before playing fireworks?
How should fireworks be stored in public gatherings?
What should be the approval criteria?

Let us propose something that can be utilized across state and local bodies and such incidents are avoided in the future.

We look forward to your inputs! more

Shri Jitendra Chandorkar Sir, I beg to submit this with all due respect to you. Kindly give up the cynicism about Modi and give some useful suggestion on the topics put up by the members of the circles you are commenting. That shall help every body. THE SUBJECT OF THIS DISCUSSION IS QUITE SERIOUS. 1. With the world wide concern about air pollution and heat-effected environment deterioration THE BEST THIN IS TO AVOID BURSTING OF FIRE CRACKERS. TEMPLES AND OTHER HOLY PLACES ARE HOUSES OF GOD. GOD GIVEN US A BOUNTIFUL EARTH AND NATURE LET US NOT SPOIL IT IN HIS NAME! There are surely better ways to show or dedication and happiness, as well as respect to God than bursting fire crackers and spoiling His KIND GIFT OF A BOUNTIFUL NATURE. If fire crackers have to be burst as display of happiness, then 1. this must be done in the open space sufficient away from buildings and the public. 2. a permission from the police and fire brigade must be obtained who should satisfy themselves about the safety concerns. The person/persons applying for permission must specify the quantum and the type of firecrackers to be used, and satisfy the concerned authorities about their being safe and the arrangement made for controlling and dealing with any mishap if it occur despite all efforts to avoid it. 3 NO FIRE CRACKERS BE ALLOWED ON PUBLIC ROADS; THIS SHOULD BE MADE A COGNIZABLE OFFENCE AS IT DOES PUT OTHER ROAD-USER TO RISK. THIS HAS BECOME RAMPANT EVEN IN MARRIAGE PROCESSIONS ALSO. 4. Of late, there have been cases of firing weapons in public function as well as family functions resulting in accidents, often fatal. THIS MUST BE NIPPED IN THE BUD AND THOSE INDULGING IN THIS MUST BE DEALT WITH THE CRIMINAL LAW PROVISION ABOUT 'PUTTING PEOPLES LIFE IN DANGER' . more

Let's not talk about rich and poor. This is about people holding people accountable. Unless we let go of the " sahib giri" and colonial mentality, this will not change. What are our investigative reporters doing? We need to expose them. more
1) First of all hand over the fire works factories to the organized sector with strict rules and regulation.Presently it is under highly disorganized sector with no approval whatsoever. 2) The chemicals they used to produce these fire crackers are of dangerous in nature and cannot be left to handle by the illiterates. 3) The present manufacturing units are located in unauthorised areas and with no safety procedure followed. 4) Their storage and handling have to be brought under some kind of regulations and inspection regimen. These fire crackers falls under hazardous category. 5) Approval criteria to be tough so that illiterates cannot venture into it. 6) Useage of crackers to be discrete and to be specified where and how to be used and stored. 7) In the name of tradition how many innocent lives we have lost and for how long? more
