Failed civic governance in Bengaluru could be your city in future

Friend in the center of the Bengaluru rains say “I feel people r still unaware about ground realities:
- No water restoration in societies in Bellandur for 3-4 weeks. That means not just drinking water. No water in Bathrooms. Not a single drop.
- Electricity is there...

...but on the verge of going out anytime.
- This is me sitting in Sterling society right opposite Ecospace, the water on the road is not going away since 30-40 hours. It will be 2 days by the evening. No action plan in visibility to solve this. I see govt has abandoned this area

- Societies with 2 level basement parking have cars fully submerged in water for more than 24 hours now. There is no sign of pumping out water because the source of water keeps filling the basement with more speed. Itlooks like our cars are submerged in a lake for weeks and owners shall forget about it for a month or so.

- There is no food supply or water supply given by BBMP or any authorities to help the society for last 24 hours now. We are on the mercy of delivery apps and the delivery partners. When they are assigned we are calling them to request to deliver this area even though they might get stuck on the flooded roads. Paying extra is not helping much. The delivery partner has to risk his vehicle safety to make sure delivery.

- The bisleri can vendors refuse to come to this side. Yesterday they were stuck in traffic and were asked to return by traffic cops. Today they have run out of water cans. We are picking water from society swimming pool and climbing stairs to do bare minimum.

- We are being asked to move out for 4-6 weeks as the conditions are unlivable. Sounds like a great idea?
- Our cars are submerged in water.
- Some of us have elderly, kids, pregnant women, pets. They are expecting us to walk on the flooded road with everything?! Most probably...

- There is no cab acceptance in this area because cars have high chances to get stuck in the floods.

If you are reading this, please spread the word about awareness and people suffering. I feel Bangalore itself is unaware then one cant expect others to sympathize.

Source of data mostly from society Name- Sterling, Bellandur. I am hearing societies in Yemalur and nearby have similar problems but they have started acting on it. more

There have been various reasons enlisted. All are valid and right. Has it gone to the right Ears and Minds ? OR WILL THE ADMINISTRATION STILL STICK TO 40 % . They are ready to plan and place it on the table. Atleast now scale down your % . Otherwise you want the party that offered 0% ? more
I agree with Ashish Rai "Restore natural ecosystems. Environment must also become an investment. Past remains a guide to a better future." If we allow builders to raise sky scrapers on rivers and lakes what else can happen.Cities may be looked after because of MONEY AND VOTE POWER but what happens to rural India? Past remains a guide to a better future, if we learn from the mistakes.Shall we? RYK. more
Another factor also being that urban flooding is a consequence of increased catchment impermeability. This was initial for catchments to yield higher water retention. Flooding occurs quickly due to faster flow times (in minutes). Alternately causal factors include urbanised landscaping caused pervious area loss of pervious area in urbanised landscaping. Inadequate drainage systems too cause blockages, exacerbated by disposal of solid waste, building debris, encroachment over stormwater drains, constructing housing on floodplains which affords natural drainage, and water-body interconnectivity loss. Of course Bengaluru's current population around 1 crore, does make resource demands that need balancing with nature's resources delivery systems. more
Superstructure of and as an information technology hub had, for about 2 decades been built over the existing infrastructure that was initially suited for making Bengaluru with her moderate, also called air-conditioned, climate, an attractive educational centre, a garden city. This new moniker attracted more professionals towards the city, than could be handled by existing infrastructure. Rapidly superstructure in the form of buildings or high density inhabitations to accommodate incoming computer knowledge class denizens, being offered high salaries, were built. City's gentrification happened rapidly. Then there is the climate change causing excessive rains, that would have ideally drained into the Bengaluru's lakes or soaked up by the earth. Now most of the earth has been paved over, making the terra firma mostly impermeable. Catastrophes as this direct our attention towards where we may make amends. Restore natural ecosystems. Environment must also become an investment. Past remains a guide to a better future. more
