“Why am I paying Rs 79 for a litre of petrol when it costs the government only about Rs 31?”
In August 2014, when petrol was at above Rs 70, India’s basket of international crude oil cost $103.86 (Rs 6,326.11) per barrel. In September 2017 though that has come down to$53.39 (Rs 3,418). When the crude costs half the price , instead of the final price at least coming down , why should it keep going up ?
The cost of every litre of crude oil that goes to the refineries of oil marketing companies (Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum) is just Rs 21.50 (as of September).
The cost of refining that crude oil with items like entry tax, refinery processing, landing cost and other operational costs, along with margins, OMC margin, transportation, freight cost etc adds to Rs 9.34. This means that the basic cost of petrol, after adding refining cost should not be more than Rs 30.84.
From 31 to 79 , the margin is 254% . Government needs money to run no doubt . Is that justifiable ?
Then there is a question of Diesel prices . No doubt there should be some way to segregate the diesel usage in Public transport . Farmers and S. U .V .users.
The petrol prices hits the middle class car user , and cab users and auto users and the Parents dropping their wards in the school and commuting to office and back. The travel cost of petrol run Cab and Auto will shoot up without ant control from the Government .

Dear All, Without Fuel no one can live on earth and the same way MONEY is the fuel for The Government. Unless something is grabbed from honourable Public, nobody gives anything to the Government. Every one is behind hiding Incomer and thereby Tax. From where the Government would bring money to survival first and for development next? Let us see the example: During COVID pandemic, The Governments appealed to support to Public. As per declarations, M/s. TATA's and Ambani's donated Rs. 1500 and Rs. 500 Crore for PM Fund. thus accumulating 2000 Crore. We have 135 Crores population. On and average suppose 50% of population is earning how much amount could be gathered if each individual contributes Rs. 100 each? Just Think. But in excess to above only 1100 Crore were gathered. Does it mean that Public share is moderate under such conditions. This was the first time that Government provided an opportunity to all of us to donate. How many are beneficiaries by donation. And hence though Petrol is cheaper or Diesel is Cheaper; The Government do not want to go at a loss for two things: 1. To earn revenue 2. To make habitual public to use public transportation. Can anyone explain why the fuel price is different between outlets in same city (same road)?

It is not only the question of high transportation cost but high price of petroleum products adversely affect the pricing of all consumer items as well as causes stiff rises in living cost. This government is always hungry for money and does not leave any scope of taxing the common man. Had it been serious and sincere to check the corruptions prevailing in every walk of life, it could have save much more than what it is earning through exorbitant taxes unjustifiably imposed on petroleum products. One should not be surprised if such unwise policy of repression causes its downfall.

How do we face the cab and auto drivers demanding more every time the price goes up. In Tamilnadu there are electronic metres functioning , for academic interest only . There is no correlation to the money taken, money shown in the metre. It is not possible to calibrate the metres every time the price goes up . So there should a system as it was in Mumbai [ not sure if it is still there ] . the taxi metres will show a standard reading . When fuel prices goes up , a conversion table issued by the Government will be circulated and the change in price will have to be paid as determined by a body and not by the taxi , auto drivers. Authorities can do this to prevent some users from getting fleeced.
