Consumer Grievances with Food Products – Inputs on Root Causes

Dear Friends,

Listed below are some of the key issues highlighted by you in the food products sector from a consumer grievance standpoint. Please review them and add if anything is missing. Otherwise, let us identify root causes to these issues.

Once we know the root causes, we will identify solutions in a separate post and then submit the whitepaper for action to related Ministries and Departments.

Thanks for your participation!

In most dept. stores & super markets the local street vendors buy the fresh produce like vegetables as soon as the new stock comes in & sell at the market at higher rates. The consumer either has to buy the leftovers from the supermarket which is o inferior quality or go to the street vendor at a high price. To show sales the supermarket employees either look the other way or are hand in glove with the local street vendors for a under hand profit. This malpractice can easily be checked by watching how much each person is buying more so if he is buying daily. In stores run by Reliance fresh & Shahkari Bhandar the fresh veggies do not even come on the shelf. They're sold out & out to the vendors. more

No control or labeling of the use of TOXIC Pesticides and Herbicides both topical and systemic in produce to warn people about the presence of such noxious substances on their food. No education on the health value of Organic or Naturally produced produce giving people the choice on what they are consuming. more
There is no facility for private citizens to get food stuff tested on their own initiative. Recently I wanted to get the milk I get from the farmer (not dairy milk) tested. I approached the govt. and college labs but they said they cannot do such tests for individual citizens. There may be private labs who do this, but getting information about them is difficult and if they are there, I am sure they must be very expensive. The only recourse is that I have to complain to the food and drugs dept. However, I do not want to do that unless I am sure that my suspicion about adulteration is justified. more
We need to do away with Inspector Raj and instead strengthen Consumers Affairs cell which keeps track of the responses of consumers and sort out their complaints expeditiously. The Consumers cell should not only relate to materials but include services, financial as well as real estate etc. more
