The cleanliness campaign must be launched at regular intervals in various cities of the country. But until and unless the public does not co-operate this cleanliness campaign drive will not be successful. Littering on the road is very common features in our country, for this heavy penalty must be imposed on such persons who throw garbage on the roads or in the nearby nalas or drains. For this, every Municipal Corporation must put garbage boxes at various places and everybody must be encouraged to throw the garbage only into these boxes.Every Nagar Palikas or Municipal corporation should arrange to provide garbage boxes to each family and as such boxes must be collected at least once a week from the houses. This must be strictly followed only then we will be able to achieve our goal. more
It is no use blaming only citizens for littering. Municipalities have failed to provide the infrastructure for hygienic and aesthetic collection of garbage as per the Rules of the Ministry of Environment & Forests. As per the Rules, municipalities are supposed to provide three colour-coded bins, green, black and white, for every 100 households or so at street corners for collecting garbage in segregated fashion. The bins should have lids or flaps so that no garbage is visible, is exposed to the environment or allows animals to feed on the garbage. Bins should be placed on cement platforms so that there is no slush around them. Without providing these bins, it is no use asking people not to litter. Of course, people have to be continuously educated to segregate garbage at source and also deposit these in the correct bins without littering around them. Municipalities have to ensure that the bins are emptied mechanically, without manual handling, before they start overflowing. An even better solution is to do as in Alleppy, Kerala. Instead of providing bins, Alleppy has set up Aerobic Compost Units at accessible points to citizens. Citizens give their segregated wet waste to these units at timings convenient to them and the entire wet waste gets converted on the spot into manure. There is no need to litter or to transport the garbage to distant landfills. Dry waste is also collected at dry waste collection centres and recycled. Round aerobic bins are also placed along the street to collect dry leaves which get composted right there. more
I would like to bringing to the notice of Government that all Municipal and Panchayat office shall be provided with sufficient no. of garbage trolley and the same has to be emptied within 4 hours and should not be overloaded and spill over of waste to be avoided. I believe a strict action like minor penalty and major penalty to be imposed for people who are throwing garbage or waste on the road and their subsidies on LPG or rice or sugar may be withdrawn and local association bodies may be included in this drive. more
Lack of cleanliness is not due to economic poverty, but of cultural poverty. I have visited a no. of villages (mostly in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh) . Poor people had overwhelming majority in all such villages. Even middle class or upper middle class were rare. There was no pucca road in many stresses. Rainy seasons used to make many roads muddy. Huts made of mud and hey laid roofs. But litters? All such villages were spotlessly free of accumulated dirts. Urban mindset is of arrogance - 'I am the monarch of all I survey' - 'what you can do?' - are the governing psychs. more
I completely agree that littering on the road is very common feature in our country and unfortunately after having swachh bharat campaign since 2014 majority of people are still doing the same. Therefore i believe that some strict actions are required for people to open their eyes and to understand the value of it. more
