Citizen Inputs on Free Basics

With Free Basics, Facebook has proposed to provide free internet access to the poor but in turn wants them to only use Facebook and its partner websites. The company has been aggressively advertising and lobbying for it.

Internet players in India are against this move by Facebook as they feel it is discriminatory and directly violate principles of net neutrality. They feel that only a few websites including Facebook will by default get access to the internet population in the country keeping them away from other websites like google, wikipedia, amazon etc and internet will not remain open for all. They do not want access to internet to be limited to a few sites who have tie-ups with telecom operators.

We would like to seek your inputs and views on the issue whether and why your support Net Neutrality or the Facebook offering.

We will combine them along with a few polls to provide TRAI with an unbiased perspective of what the collective citizen pulse is on Free Basics.

We look forward to your inputs! more

Great decision by the govt of india to oppose the free basics...Internet is already free and no "free basics" is required to make it free....As far as the internet penetration is concerned, soon we will have all the operators providing 4g services ...means internet wherever we have mobile coverage.. more
The government should give free service only for government services, basic banking, education, and watching Doordarshan. This will be the most powerful way to educate people, keep them away from bad influences, and serve them for their good. Give 30 minutes per day free usage, or 15 hours per month. More than this "free stuff" will be abused., look what people have done to Air and water, both were free. "There is still a monkey in each of us" - the Modern Guru more
It is the government to decide in the benefit of its citizens and make laws accordingly, which will stop other players from making any tricks. If Facebook really wants to move in favour of the poor users, they should not put any conditionality. more
I think instead of handing over such a huge power n decision whom to allow free and whom to paid , to any private player (not an Indian company) , government should take care of it. These multi national companies will always think for their profit and/or power. It will definitely trouble common ppl in future more
Sri Brindha Baskaran's version leads to the point that Face Book is indirectly investing for the growth of Businesses of their partners with the motto of reducing their own profits . more
