CHENNAI’s PLASTIC BAN HAS TAKEN OFF WELL from JANUARY 1st 2019 :

It was fairly well done and implemented . 6 months AHEAD , the segregation was advised , some followed , 3 months back The Ban was announced . Though the citizens didn’t take it very seriously , The NGO’s took up on them to meet the situation. Without loss of time started arrangements by motivating & training the S.H.G’s [Self Help Groups ] & women’s groups to make Paper Bags and Cloth bags to meet the situation on January 2019.

Bang on January 1st we saw the single use plastic missing in the Super stores , vegetable markets , fish markets and meat shops.

The vegetable shops replaced Plastic with paper bags , the fish markets either asked the consumer to bring vessels or supplied fresh banana leaves or dried Banyan leaves . This really reminded me of the days 40 /45 years back when we had to take our own bags and containers for each dish .

The best and most welcome was from small hotels which thrive on parcels : Any food item would be accompanied by 3 side dish , all of them packed in single use plastic. They have reduced that to just 1/3 Only on liquid side dish in plastic the other 2 in solid form with the main dish separated by Banana leaf packed in Banana leaf . So we can expect far less plastic littering generally in he state .
What is most interesting is the beaches will be cleaner than ever , as the NCCR [National Center for Coastal Research ] has come out with a Survey that the cause for the plastic liter in the Beaches of India is contributed mainly by Tourists from 45 to 65 % . more

By recycling this waste can be converted to useful plastics viz Bicycle Handle grips , furniture leg pads and others. Polythene carry bags could be recycled to get the plastic materials reclaimed .Instead simply burning the used bags and banning usage of plastic bags is not the right solution. Initiate the Indian Government for recycling, so that utilisation of wasted plastics in some other form of plastic gets generated. Regards, Mr. Mannem Nageswaraiah Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Other Metros should learn a lesson from this and implement at the earliest. more
Plastic bottles should be replaced by any other bio -degradable material. In olden days every family used to carry a metal vessel for carrying water. Nowadays copper vessels are becoming popular because of their good effect on health. more
Good initiatives these steps should be started across the country .using of mineral water bottles is OK but people use and through across roads, water bodies these things should be stopped. more
