CHANGE OF NAME OF ANNA UNIVERSITY UNNECESSARY
Government of Tamil Nadu proposes to split Anna University into two , which means adding one more university to already large number of universities and deemed universities in the state.
There are more than 520 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu with around 2.5 lakh seats.
Every year more than one lakh seats go unfilled due to want of students. In many private engineering colleges , not even 30% of allotted seats are filled.
The problem is that many passed out engineers do not get jobs due to poor standards and students are realizing that they may not get jobs after passing out and engineering education has virtually lost it’s glamour.
With so many engineering colleges, experienced and knowledgeable faculties are not available and therefore, teaching standards have become poor. In number of private engineering colleges, superannuated professors continue to be faculty members , though they may not be in the best of health and may be tired.
While many passed out students face unemployment, many employers say that they are unable to get suitable candidates as number of passed out students have poor knowledge and unfit to be employed as engineers. Even one former Vice chancellor of Anna University has confirmed this is true.
What is needed is not more universities but slashing of the number of seats in engineering colleges atleast by one lakh, as so many engineers are really not needed.
The ideal situation is to convert the poorly performing engineering colleges to skill training centres with short time duration course in subjects such as artificial intelligence, advanced welding technology, etc. where job avenues are plenty for skilled people.
Without solving the problem of crisis faced by engineering education in Tamil Nadu, government is simply adding to the number of universities .
It is sad that bureaucrats and some ministers take such critical decision without consulting the senior engineers and professors .

Merit alone the yard stick for higher education irrespective of the discipline. As far as TN is concerned No body is thinking of the children of the state. The teachers/ lecturers/ even the govt. are not dedicated. The future is really gloom. Only God alone should help to over cone these things. more

A dangerous mind set. If really we want to bring rhe suppressed up a lot has to be done to the suppressed up to 12 th standard to score very good marks and then they should compete with all by merit. I again say not all OC are intelligent and not all others dull. more

If reservation is only eyewash then why the same can not be removed? Why it is kept still and who get the advantage of it? All OC are not inteligent and all BC are not dull and even SC/ST. If we have to bring efficiency in every field my view is reservation should go and cut of marks should be kept high according to the branch of study. A pathetic situation in engineering is a student who just scored 50percent can get admitted to an engineering course! more

The suppressed community should come up.I am seeing in just one or 2 generations of opportunity their children are performing well. Several hundred years they were denied opportunity. Only now they are getting. Whether 50% or 60% they should be brought up until then patients is required. more

government has no choice. it is just a face saving formula. central govt wants to take over anna university to confer a special status on it . Funding from central govt will increase many times. now if tamil nadu government hands over the institution it will be a political issue. besides there is lot of money in accreditation to engineering colleges. just to solve this issue only they bifurcate hand over main campus to central government and other university under tamil nadu government to affiliate private engineering colleges, more
