AVENUES TO RAISE REVENUE FOR RAILWAYS -
WITHOUT HURTING ANY PARTICULAR SEGMENT OF RAI PASSENGERS .
Revenue to Railways is Important ; and as much importance is required to maintain Travel safety ,cleanliness & passenger amenities despite what class the rail user travels . Of course for the extra travel comforts passengers pay additional mounts , like A/C , extra space , privacy and so on . But the extra comforts should not be forced on passengers with motive to raise revenue, particularly the ones like imposing food onto ticket cost . FOOD SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE CHOICE OF THE PASSENGER AND NOT TO BE FORCED BY THE IRCTC.
There are several other Avenues that don’t hurt any one section of passengers. Railways shouldn’t target the same group when there is a deficit ; the railways shouldn’t take advantage of the small target Group as they are too small to raise their voices. Indian Railways has made 7 classes of reserved accommodation available to suite the comfort and the purse of the passengers.
Roughly 2,200 mail /Express trains are plying with Reservation of some or all of the 7 classes 2S, CC, SL, FIRST A/C 3T ,A/C 2T , FIRST A/C..When ever there is an increase in fare to improve operational efficiency ,there should be an increase in all classes proportionately because all are rail users. Trains are not operated for the Upper class passengers alone . Passenger amenities and cleanliness should be for all classes, and the extra comfort and luxury at extra cost. See that the facilities benefit goes to all classes and also charge all the classes that are benefited; but don’t leave out any Class when it comes to cleanliness. Now only about a small segment is being targeted again and again, that is upper class for any revenue increase. This segment is less than 25 % of the reservation class . The other segment which forms almost 75 % and may be more than 20 lakh tickets per day can also shoulder the burden .
The trains in India are running always full. For comfortable long distance travel people prefer only trains. The profitability is good for the trains. If it is mis used it is because of the railway employee. offer facilities to the passengers for the money charged. Do not seek to add comforts and facilities by charging extra. The working of Railway employees are to be toned and also make them work efficiently. Make them work smart. Run additional trains by doubling the tracks. Give priority to more traffic oriented cities. Even parcel vans and charges are good then it may fetch more money. But basic amenities of the passengers must not be curtailed or charged extra. Efficient operation, good passenger basic facilities and courteous service will fetch enough profit. Over charging will take away business from Railways to Busess and Air travel.

Railway authorities are having water tight pre-conceived ideas and it is very difficult to change.

Right from the former R.M days passengers have been harping on this aspect to leave the choice ; but the passengers are being treated like sitting ducks [easy target ]. There have been lots of issues like unhygeinic storage , heating equipment not cleaned, the tea strainers are put in the wash basin for cleaning , quality of food [FSSAI has pulled IRCTC]up for the quality ], and the exorbitant pricing and Tips. Is it still worth continuing and forcing the food on passengers .

Members have contributed practicable ideas which the Railways should read put into practice. The subject of including/discluding food from the ticket cost has been discussed several times in this Circle. The way I understood, general consensus was that passengers should have freedom to choose what they wish to eat during travel......brought from home or bought on the train. That way, the caterer on the train would be obliged to improve the quality of service, if they wish to sell their products.

Who decide the menu? Who decide the food quality? Who decide taste of food? If there is no professional presence in these, rail catering better start looking for other jobs.
