Anti Consumer Govt Move

Reports are saying Consumer Affairs Ministry is proposing to drop criminal charges against those committing repeat offences under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, but increase the amount of fine to be paid by the offenders.

I am amazed that such decisions are being made without any public consultation. Are the officers using the lockdown to take whatever decisions they want on behalf of the consumers.

I can totally see companies violating left right and center and paying fines. Who cares.

If this happens Rest in Peace the consumer movement of India.

I agree that for stupid reasons business owners shouldn't face arrest but I have seen atleast 5 times big department chains charging over MRP which was then blamed on system.

With no fear of law and just a fine in case the case comes to court, consumers will be taken for a ride.

Please rethink officials and please wake up consumers. more

The FMCG markets i India did not face any decrease in sales during the lockdown period as well. Especially the daily essential commodities saw an increase in sales. However, during this period the prices of such essentials were increased by the manufacturers by 5-25. E.g. Amul products became expensive n a range of 15-25%. Branded wheat flour became expensive by 10-15%. And, the list goes on. Lame excuses were given for such price hikes. Where in the so called anti-profiteering body? The end consumers are left at the mercy of the big and small businesses alike who leave no chance of looting the common man. We do not hope of any respite or intervention from the concerned law and authorities as they are busy filling the government coffers with fines. more

What is the use of having criminal actions if our outdated CPC and judicial process is not reformed for quick prosecution and disposal of cases filed? Corruption is another drawback more
