Listed below are the key issues and root causes related to Allotment of Berths in trains.

Allotment of Berths – Issues and Root Causes
1. The berth allotment system currently is not user friendly
2. Senior citizens are allotted upper berths
3. Disabled/women are not allotted lower berths
4. A family is not allotted seats together
5. Although there is an option,' book only if lower berth is allotted ', it does not guarantee lower berth
6. Passengers cannot choose a berth preference while booking the tickets in general class
7. The map of the available berths is not displayed while booking tickets
8. Berths are not allocated keeping the age of the passenger in mind
9. While booking tickets, there is no column which asks if a person has a special need
10. The berth availability on IRCTC does not show the availability of different berths
11. There no no lower berths reserved for the needy
It is found that while more and more a/c coaches and trains are being added for Mumbai-Delhi Mumbai - Kolkata etc the no of a/c berths allotted to south bound trains are very less and not increased for so many years. The available berths get bokked in no time on the very first day and people travelling to chennai and bangalore have to look for other options . why this partiality . there is a case forr adding at leasty on 2AC and one 3AC inthe trains from Mumbai to chennai and Mumbai to bangalore.immediately On Wed, 13 May 2015 00:34:57 +0530 Ministry Of Railways wrote >

I feel Sr.Citizens should be given lower berth reservations, may be 75% of the lower berths.

First the nexus between tickets dalal and railway's booking clerk should be broken.it is so deep rooted that general public is forced to pay hefty brokerage for tatkal premium tickets. I was travelling from Bangalore to Kolkata by duronto express. I tried to buy ticket from irctc where everything was wait listed, I got a ticket through a ticket vendor..but while travelling I found many seats vacant in 3rd a.c..transparency is missing.please install ATM like machine to book tickets at every booking office.
