A WEEK's TRASH OF PLASTIC ALONE IN A HOUSE WITH JUST 2 LIVING :
Yes , that is a week's segregated collection of Plastic in one Housing unit with just 2 .
The Chennai Corporation had sent a circular some 8 months back to segregate Plastic alone from the rest . And keep it for a week before disposing . Some are following to the hilt keeping the plastic trash generated from Wednesday to Tuesday and dispose only on Wednesday morning .
The picture shows the amount generated by 2 . No doubt it starts of every day with the opening of the Milk packet , then all the food grains , masala items , curds , soft drink bottles , sweets and chocolate packings .
I feel if this type segregation of plastic and disposing weekly should go a long way.
THE CORPORATION HAS INITIATED , PUBLICISED AND IS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THEIR DUTY IS OVER .IT IS NOW THAT THEIR DUTY HAS BEGUN .

If people are forced to keep trash in their homes for 3-4 days before going out or picked up, then slowly the realization may occur in terms of how much trash is being generated in each home on a daily basis. Besides recycling, there is an urgent need to reduce the amount of trash produced.

About 30 years back, there was very less use of plastic and all bottles were made of glass. But with the introduction of water bottles, the use of plastic started and it has reached a stage of epidemics and causing lots of hardship to the environment - because it is convenient in many ways. There should be better alternative for this.

I wish we had a system whereby we could collect as Jaykumar has, Plastic bags to be placed in a carton (Maybe this will fill in couple of months) plastic bottles and other items in a sack and deliver these to a set collection point every month. Perhaps these would be transported to the place where plastic items are transformed into carpeting for roads etc. We have no marked collection point. Would it be difficult for the Municipal authorities to work this out? I am sure every citizen would willingly co operate?
